Mother’s Marrow

Acrylic and collage on paper, 45” (h) x 73.5” (w), 2001

My paintings become stories and a way for me to unload my emotions. This was a rough year, and probably one my most prolific. In the months before 9/11, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. My mind was a whir of worry and apprehension. I created this painting as a therapeutic outlet for these feelings. Using bright pink in line with the official color of breast cancer awareness, this cheery piece belies the true story behind it.
